You might have thought that buying organic fruit was just another way to spend more money; after all, fruit is fruit. But actually, there are several reasons why it is good to know where your fruit comes from. And actually, you and your health are the centerpieces of several of these reasons!
Of course, one of the biggest benefits of buying organic fruit does not have to do with you, but has to do with farmers. You are able to support a very important industry – one that is being rapidly squeezed out by mass-produced alternatives – when you buy organic.
But even beyond doing your part to support local farmers, you will be doing your part to support your health and the environment.
Fruit that is grown by current, conventional food production measures usually has large amounts of pesticides used on it. This might seem like a negligible matter, as you may assume that these pesticides are diluted through travel and by washing your fruit. But actually, much of the pesticide residue remains on these fruits, and it enters your system when you eat the fruit. Think about the fact that every bite of fruit puts bug poison inside your body, and you begin to see why organic fruit makes sense!
You will also get a much fresher product when you buy organic than you would be able to otherwise. After all, think about buying a banana in Wyoming when that banana was shipped from Mexico. Or living in Oregon and eating an orange that was shipped to your from Florida! With such a long time between harvest, packaging, transport, stocking, and sale, you can hardly believe that you are still eating “fresh” fruit!
Of course, even if you are not buying organic fruit, fruit is still an important part of having a healthy diet. But if you take that extra step and begin to buy organic, you can know that you are getting a fresher, healthier product. And after all, if the reason you eat fruit is so that you can maintain a healthy diet, it just makes sense to make sure you are eating the healthiest available option!
